Honoring The Sandwich Generation | Pennsylvania Elder Law

For many people, the role of caregiver is one that is thrust upon them unexpectedly. As our parents age, they may begin to lose their independence and rely on their adult children for help with the complicated and costly world of long-term care.

This can be a difficult transition for both parties involved, as it can be hard to watch a parent decline and even harder to take on the responsibilities of caregiving. For those who are also raising young children, the transition can be especially challenging.

Sandwich Generation

Understandably, this group of people is often referred to as the “Sandwich Generation,” as they are sandwiched between the demands of parenting and caring for an aging parent.

With a little planning and some help from others, caregivers can successfully navigate this challenging time. We often recommend the following tips when someone steps into the role of a "Sandwich Generation Kid":

  1. Don't be afraid to ask for help! Your loved ones aren't mind readers. They need you to tell them when you need a hand or just a breather.

  2. Prioritize self-care. You are worthy and you deserve it.

  3. Seek out professional guidance from the start of your caregiving journey. Your family attorney, doctor, CPA, etc. can share tips and recommended resources with you that will help you avoid painful and expensive learning curves.

  4. Keep your plans fluid. Mom or Dad's care needs may change, and as such, their living situation may need to change for their own safety. Know that curveballs will come...but you can handle them!

  5. Educate yourself on the resources available in your community. There are likely many more helpful services available to you than you realize.
